Why hire a professional piano pickup and removal service instead of donating your old piano?

Piano donation services sound like a great way to get rid of a piano but often come with big challenges and limitations. Even if you have a perfect piano that passes the standards for donation, the process to get it donated can take weeks and at the cost of your time, energy, and space.

Free piano pickups and donations have strict requirements for what qualifies for donation or free pick up. Your piano needs to be one of the listed brands and it must be in good condition for it to be worthwhile for them to pick it up. If you pass those basic criteria, you can fill out their form, which requires descriptions of the model, serial number, your personal information, and requires you to upload photos showing the quality of the piano. After going through all of that, you’ll have to wait 3 to 7 days to hear if you qualify for an old piano donation. It’s possible they may follow up by asking for more details or photos. If you do qualify for donation, you’ll have to organize a pickup time that is likely days to weeks later when the donation service can organize resources to pick it up, leaving you with a piano you don’t want for weeks.

Comparably, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? takes all the stress out of piano pickup and removal. Find out if we take pianos in your area by calling us to book your onsite estimate. We’ll be there as soon as you need us to give you a no-obligation quote and let you know what your best piano haul away options are. Then you can sit back and watch as your piano disappears!

Piano removal FAQs

Getting rid of your old piano is not as simple as throwing it in the trash. Pianos are large and made of materials that do not break down naturally in landfills.

Here’s how you can properly get rid of your old piano:

  1. Determine if your broken piano is beyond repair - if it can be fixed, it may have more value being donated.
  2. Check to see if your local trash or junk removal service, charities, and recycling facility accepts pianos or offers piano disposal service.
  3. Schedule a pickup time with piano movers.
  4. Clear a path for the piano movers to carry the instrument through.

Moving a piano is more than a one-person job. Your best option is to hire professionals who have the tools to handle it for you.

One way to dispose of an old piano is to donate it. However, the size of your piano and the condition that it is in plays a large role in whether or not an organization will accept your donation.

There are many places that accept piano donations, including:

  • Nonprofit organizations
  • Schools
  • Social groups
  • Retirement homes
  • Recreation centers
  • Service clubs
  • Afterschool programs.

Donating to many of these organizations may be tax-deductible. Of course, there may be organizations in your area that also accept pianos in need of repair.

Pianos are made of several materials, including wood, steel wire, screws, and cast iron, that can be recycled once the instrument is broken down. If you’re looking to give your piano a second chance at life, check with your local recycling centers to find out if they will accept a used piano and whether or not it will cost you money to deliver it.

If you're getting ready to get rid of your old piano, you may want to dismantle it first for easier transportation.

To dismantle a piano:

  1. Open the piano lid and key cover to see inside the piano
  2. Unscrew the piano desk, or the space where the sheet music rests, to expose the harp
  3. Loosen the screws on the piano key cover to remove
  4. Remove the lower board cover, or the wall that houses the foot pedals, to expose the lower mechanism
  5. Loosen the screws and remove the top lid
  6. Unscrew and remove the muffler felt that runs across the action, or hammers
  7. Remove the bracket screws to loosen and remove the action
  8. Pull each key straight up to remove and place aside
  9. Loosen the tension in every string on the harp by turning the tuning pegs counterclockwise for safety
  10. Loosen and remove the key bed
  11. Lay the piano down for stability
  12. Remove the side supports
  13. Finally, remove the piano harp

Unfortunately, we can't set a fair price over the phone because it depends on your piano's size and the specialized equipment needed. For instance, the price between a grand piano and an old upright piano can vary greatly. That said, we can provide a ballpark piano junk removal estimate remotely and confirm the final price in person. Ready for an accurate piano hauling price? We understand that dealing with your piano removal needs can be challenging, so we try to make our cancellation and rescheduling as flexible as possible. You can change or cancel your appointment for this or other junk removal services anytime. Just call us at 1-800-468-5865 if you need to adjust details.

Access to off-site piano removal and disposal depends on where you live. Some of our teams can handle the whole process without you there as long as they can access the piano easily and you can pay over the phone. However, you'll need to be at your house to oversee the junk piano removal in other areas.

Let's see if we're in your neighbourhood.
This may take a moment.
