Why call the pros for piano removal instead of trying to donate it?

Donating a piano sounds like a nice idea, but it can often come with some big headaches and limits. Even if your piano is in perfect shape and meets their standards, the whole donation process can take weeks, costing you your time, energy, and space.

Places that offer free piano pickups and donations often have really strict rules about what they'll take. Your piano might need to be a certain brand and in really good condition for them to even consider picking it up for free. If it does meet their basic rules, you'll have to fill out forms with all sorts of details like the model, serial number, and your info, plus you'll probably need to send photos to show how good it is. After all that, you could be waiting 3 to 7 days just to hear if it even qualifies for donation. And they might ask for even more info or photos! If it does get approved, you'll then have to figure out a pickup time, which could be days or even weeks later, leaving you stuck with a piano you don't want for even longer.

Got questions about piano removal? We've got answers!

Getting rid of an old piano isn't as simple as just throwing it in the trash. Pianos are big and made of stuff that doesn't break down easily in landfills. Here’s a good way to handle it: First, see if your broken piano can even be fixed – if it can, someone else might want to take it. Then, check if your local trash, charities, or recycling places take pianos or offer a piano disposal service. If you find someone, set up a pickup time with piano movers. Make sure there's a clear path for them to carry it out. Moving a piano is definitely not a one-person job, so your best bet is to hire professionals who have the right tools and know-how like us at 1-800-GOT-JUNK?.

One way to get rid of an old piano is to donate it. However, the size and condition of your piano will play a big part in whether or not a group will take it. There are lots of places that might accept piano donations, such as: Non-profit groups, Schools, Social clubs, Retirement homes, Recreation centers, Service clubs, and After-school programs. Donating to some of these might even get you a tax break. Of course, there might also be local organizations in Philadelphia that take pianos that need some fixing up.

Pianos are made of different things like wood, steel wire, screws, and cast iron, and a lot of that can be recycled once the piano is taken apart. If you're hoping to give your piano a second life, check with recycling centers in Philadelphia to see if they'll take a used piano and if there's a cost to drop it off.

If you're getting ready to say goodbye to your old piano, taking it apart first can make it easier to move. Here’s a basic way to do it: Open the lid and the key cover so you can see inside. Unscrew the music desk (where you put sheet music) to see the inner parts. Loosen the screws on the key cover to take it off. Remove the lower panel (where the pedals are) to see the lower parts. Unscrew and remove the top lid. Take off the felt piece that goes across the hammers. Remove the screws holding the action (the hammers and other moving parts) to loosen and take it out. Gently pull each key straight up to remove them and set them aside. For safety, slowly loosen the tension on all the strings by turning the tuning pegs counterclockwise. Loosen and remove the key bed (where the keys sit). Carefully lay the piano down so it's stable. Take off the side supports. Finally, remove the harp (the big metal frame with the strings).

Unfortunately, it’s tough to give an exact price over the phone because it really depends on how big your piano is and if we need any special equipment to move it. For example, moving a grand piano will likely cost more than moving a small upright piano. That being said, we can usually give you a rough estimate for piano removal over the phone and then give you a firm, no-obligation price when we see the piano in person. See our pricing page here.
