Yard Sale for the Cure 2015
Yard Sale for the Cure is back. Toronto’s biggest yard sale returns on Saturday May 23, 2015. Hosted by 1-800-GOT-JUNK? at Kew Gardens from 8AM - 2PM and Trinity Bellwoods Park from 10AM - 7PM, there are thousands of quality, gently-used items on sale. Furniture, decor, sporting goods, and much more. All proceeds go to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
Since becoming involved with the event almost a decade ago, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? has helped raise over $181,000. This year, to help raise even more funds for CBCF, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? and CBCF have partnered with six Ontario-based designers to create one-of-a-kind upcycled pieces that will be auctioned off at the Trinity Bellwoods Park sale.
Amanda Forrest (amandaforrest.com), well-known for her appearances on The Marilyn Denis Show, is one of the designers who took on the challenge to create a unique and stylish piece in the name of charity. The other talented designers are Lindsey Gerrish (recreated.ca), Melissa DiRenzo (thesweetescape.ca), Staci Edwards (switchstudio.ca), Janet Hamilton (paintitlikenew.com), and Melissa Davis (melissadavis.com).
Fifteen years of junk removal in Toronto
1-800-GOT-JUNK? is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and it’s made me think about our own big milestone here in Toronto. May 26, 2014 marks the 15th anniversary of 1-800-GOT-JUNK?’s first franchise, here in Greater Toronto.
I still remember coming home after my first day – I had two jobs on the schedule, did them both myself in my brand new truck, and could NOT have been happier! Since then we have enjoyed continuous growth throughout the GTA. We’ve grown from one truck and no employees when we first started in 1999 to where we are today. Now we have 23 trucks, more than 60 employees, and a management team of eight.
We’ve done over 180,000 junk pickups in Toronto over the past 15 years. I have many things to be thankful for, and many people to thank for the success of 1-800-GOT-JUNK? here in Greater Toronto. I’d like to thank Brian Scudamore for awarding me the first franchise in the 1-800-G0T-JUNK? franchise system. I’d like to thank friends and family for their support, particularly my brother (who financed the venture!) and my wife and four children who support me every day: you are the joy of my life.
I’d also like to thank my leadership team, most of whom started as Truck Team Members and have been with me for more than 10 years at this great journey.
But there are two groups I’d like to thank above all others. First, the men and women who have served our clients as Truck Team Members over the years – you have been, and continue to be, the backbone of this company. As the people responsible for providing outstanding service to each and every one of our clients, your dedication has been the primary driver of our growth. And finally, I’d like to thank the tens of thousands of realtors, property managers, contractors, businesses, and homeowners who have chosen our service over the past fifteen years. It has been a pleasure working with you.
My team and I look forward to continuing to serve you for another 15 years and beyond!
Help us raise $50,000 to cure breast cancer
This year, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? Toronto is planning its biggest Yard Sale for the Cure to date. We plan to fill seven 50 foot trailers with amazing items we find on our daily escapades removing junk in and around Toronto and the GTA. We will have enough treasures to fill KEW Gardens in the Beaches and the south side of Trinity Bellwoods Park at Queen St West and Strachan Ave.
Along the way, we will be posting some of the great items we find on 1-800-GOT-JUNK? Toronto's Facebook Page and on Twitter at #gotjunkyardsale
We will be tweeting live at the event with updates on some of our best items!
Our goal this year is to raise a whopping $50,000!
We need your help to do it – so come out to the event to find some treasures, and know that your money is going to a great cause.
Yard Sale for the Cure 2014
Date: Saturday, May 24, 2014
Time: 8:30 am.
Where: Trinity Bellwoods Park and KEW Gardens
In addition to hosting the event in May, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? Toronto will be manning the Canadian Breast Cancer booth at the National Home Show in Toronto starting on March 14th through March 23rd as a build-up to the event. Attendees of the show will have the opportunity to bid on, and take home, some of our greatest finds with all funds received going to breast cancer research.
Information will also be on hand as to how to start your own yard sale and turn the stuff you don’t need into a cure for breast cancer.
1-800-GOT-JUNK?’s Yard Sale Story
Rachel Smith, a resident of the Beaches community in Toronto (and just a few blocks from our office), started Yard Sale for the Cure in 2005 shortly after winning her 9-month battle with breast cancer. The event was created based on the idea that the stuff you don’t need will help find a cure for breast cancer.
Like most families, many of us at 1-800-GOT-JUNK? Toronto have been touched by breast cancer and the battle that ensues for survival. 1-800-GOT-JUNK? Toronto’s operations manager, Ashton Lubman’s, mother is a breast cancer survivor.
Given what 1-800-GOT-JUNK? does each and every day, it just made sense to partner with Rachel Smith and in turn our customers, to collect items and host one of the city’s largest Yard Sale for the Cure events.
Our first event took place in May, 2006 in the driveway of a community church. To prepare for that event, we kept the best items we picked up the previous week and sold them to passersby’s for a total of $5,161. We have participated in the Yard Sale every year since, each year expanding our sale and improving our fundraising efforts.
Over the past 8 years, we have fundraised over $150,000!
$37,000 Raised for Breast Cancer
1-800-GOT-JUNK? Toronto raised a record breaking $37,000 this year for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation during our 8th annual Yard Sale for the Cure on May 25 at Kew Gardens and Trinity Bellwoods Park. This brings the total amount we've raised over the past eight years to nearly $150,000!
