Hauling for Help
Star 105.5 has an outdoor garage sale every year in the fall. We have participated in the removal and cleanup of left behind items such as: refrigerators, desks, electronics, and garbage. After the event was all cleaned up, we drove the items to a local boys scout troop. We unloaded and donated the items that would benefit them into a garage.
True Tales of Junk Pickup
Fossils Anyone?
One of Illinois North Central's truck team members didn't know what they were in for when they showed up on a job where a gentleman opened up the garage door and said that he would like all these boxes to be removed. The truck team member opened a box, and to his amazement, it was full of fossils. In all the boxes were old fossils that this gentleman saved and collected. It happened to be two truckloads full of fossils. The fossils were than donated to area schools and to a local museum.
Do you take Burgers?
Chicago's 1-800-GOT-JUNK team were called out one day to pickup a Mayor McCheese play set. The truck team handled it with no problem and drove away with a large hamburger in the back of the junk truck.
Ouch! Couch.
Our truck team was dispatched to a job where a couch was left outside on a property. After loading it on the truck, they heard a buzzing sound from within the couch and the fabric appeared to be moving up and down. Their suspicions were confirmed when stray bees started wandering out from under the couch!
Crazy Waves Around Chicago?
We have a fun culture at 1-800-GOT-JUNK?. Chicago Northwest's 1-800-GOT-JUNK? don't just stand on the side of the street and wave they do everything from throwing the football to sitting on a couch to pretending they're in a band. When the Bears were in the Super Bowl last year they rented a Grizzly bear outfit and squeezed a Bears jersey over it and wandered around Elmhurst with a sign - This attracted quite a few stares!!!
Digging out of your mess
Gerry Cote's 1-800-GOT-JUNK? team got their biggest assignment in a home cleanout when they arrived at a home that was filled floor to ceiling and wall to wall with junk. We literally dug our way from room to room in order to complete this assignment. Total truckloads for a two bedroom home with a basement = twenty three.
Where it all ends up
Much of the "junk" that we pick up is recycled and donated. Our exclusive transfer station takes all of our construction debris, and recycles it. 90% of all of the metal items we collect are taken to metal recyclers. We donate items to local schools, Goodwill Industries, and various second hand stores that generate funds for Outreach. We are local residents working to give back to the community.
We have a great relationship with many of the local donation centers. Twice is Nice Resale Shop in Carol Stream has been a grateful recipient of much of the ""junk"" that we remove and they have seen record numbers for 2007 as a result of our partnership. Twice is Nice Resale Shop is owned and operated by College Church in Wheaton but all the proceeds are generously donated to the Outreach Community Center in Carol Stream.
1-800-GOT-JUNK? "The world's largest junk removal service", and The ReUseIt Center, a not for profit company benefitting the Mid-Valley Neighborhood Improvement Association, Inc., combine their teams together to make a difference in the community.
In 2006 and 2007 Chicago West's 1-800-GOT-JUNK? franchise assisted Baird and Warner Real Estate on their annual "Make A Difference Day" campaign. We donated clothes racks to their Naperville office for a clothes drive. We transported food items collected by their Wheaton office to the Illinois Food Bank and we collected and delivered construction items organized by their St. Charles office to the ReUseIt Center in Batavia.
