Each year, Earth Day is celebrated all around the world on April 22 and the month of April has grown into an entire month to honor the Earth. At 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, we believe that together we can make an environmental difference for future generations by becoming as environmentally-conscious as possible.
Not just on Earth Day, but every day our teams across North America and Australia donate and recycle as much junk as they can. In 2009 we hired an independent auditor to measure just how much we divert from the landfill system-wide. At that time it was determined that 61.3% of the junk we collect is either donated to charity or recycled. Our goal is to increase that to 75% by the end of 2013. In addition a number of our franchise partners far exceed the current diversion rate! And now, in 2011, we are in the midst of another system-wide audit.
At 1-800-GOT-JUNK? we are able to recycle a wide variety of materials, including: green waste, such as yard debris; household items and appliances; construction and demolition debris; metal; glass; plastic; paper; tires; and electronics. Donatable items include anything there is a demand for from charities and second-hand stores. These may include: household furnishings, appliances, and electronics; clothing; toys and games; and building materials.
Check out our website environmental ticker: to date 1-800-GOT-JUNK? has saved 1.9 billion pounds of junk from the landfill, and counting!
Another way we take care of the Earth is through community Earth Day events. Over the past few years our franchise partners have hosted a variety of community events to celebrate Earth Day – from free e-waste disposal to highway clean-ups. Please watch your local community papers for upcoming events near you.
