Hi! I’m David Harrop, your local franchise owner of 1-800-GOT-JUNK? in Calgary. Our 1-800-GOT-JUNK? office is located in Bowness, half way between Shouldice Park and Bowness Park just south of Canada Olympic Park. I took over the junk removal franchise in 2003 after selling my Certa Pro Painters franchise, which I owned and operated for five years. I was looking for a fun business with a great team and a young, fun culture where we could work hard and play hard.
Being part of the 1-800-GOT-JUNK? business has enabled me to become part of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, JCI Calgary, and the Calgary chapter of the Entrepreneurs' Organization. These great organizations have helped us grow to be one of the top five franchises in the 1-800-GOT-JUNK? system, and has given us the opportunity to expand our operations to encompass the 1-800-GOT-JUNK? franchise in Hawaii. We have even participated in being a case study for the University of Calgary MBA program.
We recently opened a sorting facility in south Calgary where we can sort through the junk to maximize recycling opportunities. We estimate that we will divert as much as 70% of the junk from our landfills, to recyclers including wood, glass, plastic, metal, paper and green waste. We feel great about our pro-active recycling efforts as the City of Calgary increases its own mandates about landfill diversions.
Thank you to the 10,000 plus customers in Calgary who have hired us to remove 10,000 tones of junk from their homes and businesses. We still have lots of work to do, but we are getting it done, one truck at a time!

In The Community
The Underwear Affair was a Success!
Despite rain and snow this year, the 1-800-GOT-JUNK? team were amongst the 1,240 people who took to the streets of Calgary dressed down to our underwear. Together we raised a lot of eyebrows, but more importantly, we raised over $1,800 adding to an incredible $850,000 for research that will ultimately benefit patients at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and throughout Alberta. The money we raised will help researchers uncover new treatments and ways to prevent devastating yet “hidden” cancers like prostate, colorectal, ovarian, testicular, bladder, cervical, and uterine. Our support of The Underwear Affair will make sure these cancers get the attention they deserve.
1-800-GOT-JUNK? Celebrates Earth Day
At 1-800-GOT-JUNK? environmental responsibility is important to us. As a celebration of Earth Day 2009 we offered a free electronic waste disposal event at three Staples locations in Calgary. We collected three full truckloads of unwanted computers, monitors, printers and other components. We handed all of it over to eCycle Solutions, an ARMA-approved e-waste recycler who will guarantee secure data destruction and environmentally sound recycling.
Spicing Up Spaces
The 5th annual “Spice Up Space," a Commerce Undergraduate Society program to help a needy family, was a resounding success this past weekend. The family chosen for this year’s renovation was a family of six, led by a grandmother who recently lost her husband and is raising five children alone. As part of their community outreach program, the business students enlisted the support of local companies, including 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, to help a deserving family. 1-800-GOT-JUNK? was on site throughout the weekend, hauling away over a truckload of debris. Cody Parrish, Vice President of Internal Events, said, “We couldn’t pull this off year after year without the support of the community. Companies like 1-800-GOT-JUNK? that come in and offer their services really make a difference."
