Hi, we are Casey and Tim Stark and we are in our fifth year of operating our 1-800-GOT-JUNK? junk removal franchise in Ann Arbor. Although our junk hauling franchise is officially called Ann Arbor, we operate in Washtenaw, Livingston, Lenawee, Monroe and northern Oakland Counties. We have a crew based in Ann Arbor and one based in Troy.

We began operations in our house, worked on the junk trucks every day and completed paperwork in the evenings. Now, we have an Operations Manager and an Office Manager so our time is much more free to work on building the business as well as pursuing additional interests. Tim is completely renovating our house on Hiscock Street in Ann Arbor and I am working on my certification as a Russa Yog (rope yoga) instructor.

Our entire experience with 1-800-GOT-JUNK? has been wonderful. We knew the moment we looked into 1-800-GOT-JUNK? that we wanted nothing else but to become involved with this trash business and the fun, creative people that are involved in it. My past employment experience has been with non-profits doing PR and fundraising or working for larger corporations in the HR or Marketing departments. While these positions provided me with a paycheck and great experience, nothing has been as rewarding as owning my own business. We have some incredible people working for us and I am grateful for their contributions and spirit!

Our professional affiliations include the local Home Builders Association, the Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce, Brighton Chamber of Commerce, Birmingham-Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce and the Troy Chamber of Commerce. We are also Waste Knot Partners in Washtenaw County and are a member of the Clean Cities Coalition. I am a member of the Women Business Owners of SE Michigan and am a member of the Events Committee for the Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce.

Our office is located on US-23, about one mile north of 6 Mile Rd, halfway between Ann Arbor, MI and Brighton, MI in Whitmore Lake, MI. We are across the street from Northfield Township Police and Fire Departments. Our office used to be a PutPut Golf range and ice cream shop.

Accepting Economic Downturn

The down-turned economy in Ann Arbor and all of southern Michigan is tough on businesses of all sizes. However, keeping a positive attitude and setting goals for the future may very well be the remedy to weather the rough times. Trash hauling operator Casey Stark is still enjoying steady sales of her junk removal service, and she is ready to ramp up when the economy picks up again.

In The Community

Our Trucks in the Ann Arbor Community

We have had so much fun getting involved in community events! They have provided us with some surprises and opportunities to meet people who need our junk removal service. We were contacted by the horn section of the University of Michigan Marching Band after they saw our junk pickup trucks driving about and asked if they could "adopt" us for the year. We provided them all 1-800-GOT-JUNK? t-shirts and had a blast taking pictures of them perched on one of our junk pickup trucks!

We also love to sign up for local parades. You can always find our junk removers there! Every year we are in the Ann Arbor 4th of July Parade as well as the Chelsea Festival of Lights Parade held in December. Last year we decided to do some fundraising work and signed up for Climb Detroit, an event run by the American Lung Association. We wore our Powered By Junk shirts and ran/walked all the steps to the top of the Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit.

Junk Haulers Prevent Fire Tragedy

We had a major challenge in August of 2006 when we had a fire in our office on Washtenaw Ave. in Ann Arbor. Old and faulty wiring caused a fire behind a wall which immediately burst into flames and thick, choking smoke. We were there at the time and were able to get our staff, computers and files outside quickly. There were residential apartments above our office in the same building, so our junk crew ran upstairs and pounded on doors to wake everyone up and get them out. It turns out that there were no smoke alarms upstairs, so our junk crew helped prevent a potential tragedy. The fire was put out quickly by the fast and professional work of the Ann Arbor Fire Department.
